F, J and I visa holders are admitted for a fixed period instead of duration of status
A DHS final rule effective September 15, 2026 replaces admission for duration of status with a fixed period and adds an extension of stay procedure.
The Department of Homeland Security amended its regulations to change the admission period in the F, J and I classifications from duration of status to a fixed time period. The rule also changes admission and extension requirements for these categories.
The classifications cover academic students, exchange visitors, and representatives of foreign information media. The effective date is September 15, 2026.
