USCIS can now require electronic filing for certain forms
An interim final rule lets USCIS make e-filing mandatory for certain benefit requests and sets out how to ask for a waiver.
The Department of Homeland Security amended its regulations so that USCIS may require mandatory electronic filing of certain benefit requests. The rule describes the process USCIS will follow before a form becomes e-file only.
It also explains how a person who is unable to file electronically may request a waiver of the requirement. The rule took effect on August 11, 2026.
Anyone who files forms with USCIS. Check the page of your form on uscis.gov to see whether paper filing is still accepted.
