What is special about it

Inside a Russian diploma: the details that decide it

Russian diplomas have changed form several times since 1991, but the fields are stable: the institution, the years of admission and graduation, the specialty or program, the qualification awarded and the decision of the state examination board.

Specialist is not a Master

The five-year Specialist qualification is translated as Specialist, with the specialty named. Evaluators know the term; renaming it creates a mismatch with the original.

Qualification and specialty codes

The qualification line and the specialty with its numeric code are translated as printed, so they can be matched to the supplement.

Patronymic on the diploma

The graduate's name is spelled as in the passport, patronymic included, so the diploma and the transcript match the passport used for the evaluation.

Series, number, seal, honors

The series and number, the registration number, the round seal and the with honors line are translated or described; Soviet diplomas add the republic seal.

Which version do you have

Higher education or vocational college, the evaluator reads the title

Russia issues diplomas at two levels that look alike: the higher education diploma from a university and the diploma of secondary vocational education from a college or technical school. The title line tells them apart.

Higher education diploma

Bachelor, Specialist, Master
  • A hard-cover folder, blue or red for honors, with a printed insert carrying the Russian coat of arms, a series and number, and the words for higher education
  • The graduate's name with patronymic, the university, the qualification (Bachelor, Specialist, Master) with the program or specialty and its code, the board decision and the date
  • The whole insert: every field, the form text, the seal, the signatures and the honors line; Soviet-era diplomas add the republic seal
  • Asked for by WES and other evaluators, universities, licensing boards and employers

Send the insert open flat, both halves, and the supplement as a separate order.

Secondary vocational diploma

College or technical school
  • A similar folder and insert with the words for secondary vocational education and, on older ones, the name of the tekhnikum or uchilishche
  • The graduate's name, the college, the specialty with its code, the qualification awarded (for example technician or nurse) and the board decision
  • The whole insert, with the level named exactly as printed and the qualification kept literal
  • Asked for by evaluators, licensing boards for nurses and technicians, community colleges and employers

Send the insert open flat; if you also have a higher education diploma, send both and each is quoted as its own page.

The whole document, not just the fields

Every line of the insert, and the cover too

Examination board decision and protocol

The line recording the decision of the state examination board, with its date and protocol number, is translated in full, because evaluators use it to date the award.

Rector and board chair

The signature block names the rector and the chair of the board. Their names and titles are transliterated, so the seal and signatures can be matched to the original.

Cover and form text

The title on the cover, the pre-printed wording and the coat of arms are described, so the English page identifies the same physical document.

Translator's notes in brackets

A term with no direct English equivalent, or the current name of a renamed university, is given in a bracketed note marked as a translator's note, never blended into the text.

Questions answered

Russian diploma, the questions we hear most

Is this translation accepted by WES?

WES asks for a complete, literal, word-for-word translation prepared by a translation service, and that is the format we deliver. WES may also require documents sent directly by the institution; that step is separate from the translation.

My diploma is from a university that has been renamed or merged. What do you write?

The name printed on the diploma, exactly. If you want the current name for the evaluator, tell us and it is added as a translator's note, clearly marked.

Do you translate the Soviet-era diploma the same way?

Yes. The Soviet blue diploma with the qualification line and the state examination commission decision follows a standard layout and is translated literally, including the republic seal.

Do I need an apostille on the diploma for WES?

WES does not require an apostille. If you obtained one, it is translated as part of the same order.

How much does it cost and how fast is it?

From $23.70 per document, certification included. A one-page document is usually ready the next business day; the date is confirmed before you pay.
