Russian divorce certificate translation, certified for USCIS

In Russia a divorce through court still ends with a ZAGS certificate, and that certificate is usually what an officer wants to see rather than the court file alone. We translate whichever you hold, in full, with a signed certificate of accuracy.

What is special about it

Russian divorce certificate, line by line: what the reviewer compares

The certificate of dissolution of marriage names both former spouses with patronymics, the ground for the divorce (a joint application or a court decision with its date) and the surname each person carries afterward.

Both former spouses, patronymics kept

Names are transliterated in full; yours as in your passport, the former spouse's as in any document you can send or by standard rules otherwise.

The court decision line

When the divorce went through court, the certificate cites the court, the decision date and the case. Those details are kept exactly so they match the decree if you file it too.

Surname after divorce

The line about the surname after dissolution is translated word for word; it is the only proof of why your documents show two different surnames.

ZAGS seals and act numbers

The registry office, the act record number and the seal are translated or described, including on Soviet-era forms.

Which version do you have

ZAGS certificate or court decision, Russia wants the certificate

In Russia a court divorce is registered at ZAGS afterward, and the certificate from ZAGS is the record most offices look for. Many clients hold both.

ZAGS certificate of dissolution of marriage

The final record
  • One A4 sheet on watermarked security paper with a series and number and the Russian coat of arms
  • Both former spouses with patronymics, the date the marriage ended, the ground (joint application or a court decision with its date), the surnames after divorce, the act record number and the office
  • The whole page, every field and the form text, the round seal and the signature block, plus any stamp on the back
  • Asked for by USCIS in spousal petitions and adjustment of status, and by Russian consulates for passport matters

Send the front and the back in one flat photo or scan each.

Court decision with legal-force stamp

Court divorces, supporting
  • Typed pages from a district or magistrate court, with the court's name at the top, the judge's signature and a stamp on the last page that the decision entered into legal force
  • The parties, the ruling on dissolution, the date it took effect and sometimes decisions on children or property
  • Every page in full, including the stamp, the court seal and the mark that the copy is true
  • Asked for when the divorce went through court, usually together with the ZAGS certificate that followed

Send every page in order; if you have not yet received the ZAGS certificate, we translate the decision now and the certificate later as its own page.

The whole document, not just the fields

Not only the two surnames, the whole record

Series, number and form text

The series with its Roman numeral, the six-digit number and the pre-printed wording of the form are copied and translated, so the translation identifies the same certificate.

Three dates on one page

The date the marriage ended, the date of the act record and the issue date can all differ. Each is labeled and converted to the US format so none is mistaken for another.

Marks on the back and on copies

A stamp on the back of the certificate, or the true-copy mark and seal on a court copy, is translated in place with its date and office.

Handwriting and Soviet-era forms

Certificates of dissolution from the Soviet period are handwritten. Every legible word is transcribed, and an unreadable fragment is marked rather than guessed.

Where it is accepted

Questions answered

Russian divorce certificate, the questions we hear most

Will USCIS accept this translation?

It follows what USCIS asks for: the whole document in English plus a signed statement that the translator is competent and the translation is complete and accurate. Every order includes that statement, signed and dated by the translator.

I divorced through court in Russia. Do I need the ZAGS certificate as well?

In Russia the court decision alone is usually not treated as the final record; the certificate from ZAGS is. If you only have the decision, we translate it and you can ask ZAGS for the certificate in parallel.

The decree is six pages. Do you translate all of them?

Yes, every page, including the stamp that the decision entered into legal force. Blank pages are not counted.

My divorce was registered in the Soviet Union. Can you work with that form?

Yes. Soviet certificates of dissolution of marriage are in Russian and follow a standard layout; handwritten entries and faded stamps are translated or described.

How much does it cost and how fast is it?

From $23.70 per document, certification included. A one-page document is usually ready the next business day; the date is confirmed before you pay.
