What is special about it

What gets checked in a Russian foreign passport: names, dates, stamps

Five-year and ten-year biometric passports, older non-biometric booklets and passports issued by consulates abroad all end up in immigration files. Each has a slightly different set of pages.

Your Latin spelling, fixed

The spelling on the data page becomes the spelling of your name in every document we translate for you. Where an older passport used a different standard, both are noted.

Border stamps and visas

Russian exit and entry stamps, visas of other countries and consular notes are translated with dates converted to the US format.

Children and previous passports

Older passports record children on inside pages, and some carry a note about a replaced passport. Those entries are translated.

Only filled pages counted

A 46-page passport with six stamped pages is six pages of translation. The blank ones are listed as blank.

Which version do you have

Ten-year biometric or five-year booklet, both are valid and both are translated

Russia issues two foreign passports side by side: the biometric one valid for ten years and the older type valid for five. The layout of the stamped pages is the same; the data page differs.

Ten-year biometric passport

Most common today
  • A booklet with a thick plastic data page carrying a chip symbol, a laser-engraved photo and 46 pages in total
  • Name in Latin letters by the current transliteration rules, date and place of birth, number, issue and expiry dates, the issuing authority, often MVD or a consulate abroad
  • The data page and every page with a stamp, visa or note; the chip page is described, and blank pages are listed as blank
  • Asked for by USCIS, consulates, employers, banks and the DMV whenever identity or travel history is checked

Send every page, blank ones included, as one set of flat photos, and tell us if an older passport spelled your name differently.

Five-year passport

Older non-biometric booklet
  • A thinner booklet with a laminated paper data page, a glued photo and 36 pages, still in circulation and valid until its expiry date
  • The same data fields, sometimes by older transliteration rules, and inside pages where children may be entered with photos
  • The data page, the children's page when filled and every page with a stamp, visa or note; blank pages listed as blank
  • Asked for in the same cases, and often together with the biometric one when travel history spans both

Send every page of both passports if you hold two; the translation states which passport each page belongs to.

The whole document, not just the fields

From the chip page to the last stamp, the whole booklet accounted for

Issuing authority and code

The authority on the data page may be a numeric code, an MVD division or a consulate abroad. It is spelled out and translated so the reviewer knows which office issued the passport.

Page numbers and blank pages

Each translated page is labeled with its number in the passport, and the blank pages are listed by number, so nothing looks skipped.

Visa stickers, field by field

Visas of other countries are translated with their type, validity, number of entries and issuing post, and any annotation written over the sticker.

Cancelled and corrected entries

A cancelled visa, a crossed-out stamp or a correction stamped by an authority is translated and marked as cancelled, so the travel record reads as the original does.

Where it is accepted

One translation, accepted where you need to file

The same certified file works for immigration, courts, universities and employers. Say who it is for when you order and the certificate is worded for that office.

USCIS

Green card, citizenship and asylum filings. Certification statement on every page set.

Immigration courts

Same certified translation, laid out page by page so the clerk can compare it with the original.

Universities and WES / ECE

Admissions offices and credential evaluators get the certified English file with the original attached.

Employers and licensing boards

HR departments get the translation with the certificate, ready to attach to an application.

Questions answered

Russian passport, the questions we hear most

Do you translate my internal Russian passport too?

Yes, but it is a separate document with its own page on this site; the internal passport has registration, marital status and children pages that matter for USCIS. This page is about the foreign passport.

My name in the passport follows the newer transliteration rules and differs from my old documents. What now?

We use the current passport spelling and add the earlier spelling in a translator's note when you tell us about it, so the reviewer sees they are the same person.

Will USCIS accept this translation?

It follows what USCIS asks for: the whole document in English plus a signed statement that the translator is competent and the translation is complete and accurate. Every order includes that statement, signed and dated by the translator.

Do I need to send the whole passport?

Send every page, including blank ones, as one set of photos. We translate the pages with entries and record which pages were blank, so nobody wonders whether something was left out.

How much does it cost and how fast is it?

From $23.70 per document, certification included. A one-page document is usually ready the next business day; the date is confirmed before you pay.
