What is special about it

Russian military ID, line by line: what the reviewer compares

Soviet red booklets and the current Russian ones share the structure, but abbreviations pile up: unit numbers, VUS codes, fitness categories and reserve groups. Each is translated with the original kept where an officer may want to check it.

VUS codes and ranks

The military specialty code is kept as printed with its description translated; ranks are translated with the Russian term in brackets.

Service record pages

Enlistment, unit, position and discharge entries are translated with unit numbers and dates as printed.

Enlistment office stamps

Registration and deregistration stamps, including the reserve category, are translated with dates in the US format.

Patronymic kept

The name keeps its patronymic and is spelled as in your passport, so the ID matches your other documents.

Which version do you have

Enlisted or officer's booklet, two forms, one translation

Russia issues one form of the military ID to soldiers, sailors, sergeants and petty officers, and a different one to officers of the reserve. The sections differ, and the translation follows whichever you hold.

Enlisted military ID

Most common form
  • A small hard-cover booklet with the coat of arms, issued on conscription or on transfer to the reserve
  • Personal data, VUS code, service record, reserve category, fitness category and enlistment office stamps
  • Every filled page and stamp is translated, page by page, in the original order
  • Asked for by USCIS and consular officers as the record of your service or reserve status

Send all pages, including blank ones, in one set of photos.

Officer's military ID

For reserve officers
  • A booklet of the same size with added sections on officer ranks, positions held and military education
  • Rank assignments with order numbers, positions, units and the date of transfer to the reserve
  • Rank and position entries are translated with the original terms in brackets; unit numbers stay as printed
  • Asked for in the same cases, and sometimes by employers checking a military education

Photograph every spread with an entry and tell us if any page is missing.

The whole document, not just the fields

The whole booklet, stamps and margins too

Page numbers kept

Each translated page is headed with the booklet's page number and section name, so an officer can find the same entry in the original.

Handwritten entries and corrections

Service entries are written by hand; each is translated as written, and crossed-out or corrected text is described rather than silently fixed.

Series, number and order references

The booklet's series and number, the order numbers behind each entry and the unit numbers are copied exactly as printed.

Dates in sequence

Enlistment, transfer and deregistration dates are converted to the US format and kept in the order they appear.

Where it is accepted

One translation, accepted where you need to file

The same certified file works for immigration, courts, universities and employers. Say who it is for when you order and the certificate is worded for that office.

USCIS

Green card, citizenship and asylum filings. Certification statement on every page set.

Immigration courts

Same certified translation, laid out page by page so the clerk can compare it with the original.

Universities and WES / ECE

Admissions offices and credential evaluators get the certified English file with the original attached.

Employers and licensing boards

HR departments get the translation with the certificate, ready to attach to an application.

Questions answered

Russian military ID, the questions we hear most

Do you translate the Soviet-era military ID?

Yes. The Soviet booklet follows the same page logic in Russian, and handwritten entries or faded stamps are translated or described.

Some pages are just stamps. Do they count?

A page with a stamp is a page with an entry, and it is translated and counted. Pages with nothing on them are listed as blank and not charged.

What about the medical fitness category?

It is translated as printed, with the category letter kept and its description translated.

Will USCIS accept this translation?

It follows what USCIS asks for: the whole document in English plus a signed statement that the translator is competent and the translation is complete and accurate. Every order includes that statement, signed and dated by the translator.

How much does it cost and how fast is it?

From $23.70 per document, certification included. A booklet with four filled pages is a short document, usually the minimum; the price is shown right after upload and the date is confirmed before you pay.
