Ukrainian school certificate translation, certified for colleges and WES

Ukraine has renamed its school-leaving document more than once: atestat, then svidotstvo about complete general secondary education, with a grade sheet on the 12-point scale since 2000. Whichever form you hold is translated literally with a signed certificate of accuracy.

What is special about it

Inside a Ukrainian school certificate: the details that decide it

The 12-point scale, the two document names in circulation and the bilingual forms from the nineties are the details that confuse readers abroad. The translation states the scale once and keeps the document name as printed.

12-point grades as printed

Grades from 1 to 12 are copied as numbers with the scale stated once. Older forms with five-point marks are handled the same way, on their own scale.

Svidotstvo or atestat

The document name and the level (basic secondary after grade nine or complete general secondary after grade eleven) are translated as the certificate states them.

Ukrainian spelling first

The graduate's name is transliterated from the Ukrainian text to match the passport, with a note if the certificate is bilingual.

Seal and apostille

The school seal, the number and, when present, the apostille from the Ministry of Education and Science are translated or described.

Which version do you have

Svidotstvo or atestat, the name changed, the document did not

Ukraine renamed its school-leaving document from atestat to svidotstvo, and the grade sheet moved to the 12-point scale in 2000. The form you hold sets the document name and the scale in the translation.

Svidotstvo, current form

Most common today
  • A printed sheet or folder insert with the trident, the words for complete or basic general secondary education, a series and number, plus a separate grade sheet (dodatok)
  • The graduate's name with patronymic, the school's full name, the year, the level completed, the number, and the subjects with 12-point grades on the grade sheet
  • Both pages in full: form text, level as printed, every subject and grade with the scale stated once, the seal and the director's signature
  • Asked for by colleges, universities, WES and other evaluators, and by USCIS in some student and family cases

Send the certificate and the grade sheet as separate flat photos, both sides of each.

Atestat, older form

Issued before the rename
  • A folder insert or a single sheet titled atestat, in Ukrainian or bilingual with Russian on nineties forms, with a grade sheet on the 12-point or the older 5-point scale
  • The graduate's name, the school, the year, the level completed, the number, and the subjects with grades
  • Both pages in full, document name kept as atestat, the scale stated once, the seal and signatures noted; on bilingual forms the Ukrainian text is the source
  • Asked for by the same evaluators and universities; the older name is kept as printed and the translation states the level

Send both sides of the certificate and of the grade sheet; if any entries are handwritten, they must be readable.

The whole document, not just the fields

Trident, grade sheet and seal, every line in English

Form text and numbers

The pre-printed wording of the certificate and the grade sheet, the trident and the series and number are copied or described, so the English pages identify the same document.

Subjects word for word

Subject names are translated literally, including electives and regional subjects, so the list can be compared line by line with the original.

Year of completion and issue date

The year the course was completed and the date on the certificate are converted to the US format with the original kept.

Grade sheet tied to the certificate

The grade sheet is translated as its own page and carries the certificate number and the graduate's name, so the two pages stay together in the file.

Where it is accepted

Questions answered

Ukrainian school certificate, the questions we hear most

Do colleges accept this translation?

The translation is certified and literal, which is the format colleges and evaluators ask for. Some also want the school to send records directly; that is separate from the translation.

My certificate is from the nineties and bilingual. Which text do you use?

The Ukrainian text is the source, and the Russian side is checked for entries filled in only there. The English file notes that the original is bilingual.

Is a 12-point grade converted to a US grade?

No. The grade is copied and the scale stated; conversion is the school's or evaluator's step.

Do I need an apostille?

Colleges and evaluators usually ask for the certified translation, not an apostille. If you have one, it is translated with the certificate.

How much does it cost and how fast is it?

From $23.70 per document, certification included. A one-page document is usually ready the next business day; the date is confirmed before you pay.
