What matters in this document

Two names, one record, no room for guessing

A marriage certificate names two people, the surname each of them carries after the wedding, the registry office and the date. The officer reads all of it against the original and against your other forms.

Both spouses, both passports

Each name is spelled as in that person's passport, so the certificate matches the petition and the beneficiary's documents at the same time.

Surname after marriage

The line that records which surname each spouse took is translated exactly, because it explains why the name on the certificate differs from the name on the passport.

Marriage date and issue date

Both dates are converted to the US month-first format. When the certificate was issued years after the wedding, the two dates are kept apart, not merged.

Registry stamps and later notes

Seals, registration numbers and any note on the back about a divorce or a duplicate are translated or described.

Which version do you have

Issued at the wedding or reissued later, the officer needs to know which

The certificate handed to you at the registry office and a duplicate issued years later look almost the same, but the dates on them differ. Here is how to tell them apart.

Certificate issued at registration

Original as issued
  • A single sheet on security paper, or a Soviet-era folded form, with the issue date matching the wedding date
  • Both spouses' names before and after marriage, dates and places of birth, the date of registration, the act record number and the office
  • The full page including the surname-after-marriage line, the form text, the seal and any later stamp about a divorce on the back
  • The standard proof of marriage for a spousal petition, a joint tax or insurance matter and a surname change

Send the front and the back, even if the back looks empty, in one flat photo or scan each.

Duplicate issued later

Reissued by the registry
  • The current form of the issuing country with a duplicate or repeat mark and an issue date long after the wedding
  • The same record as the original, rewritten from the register, sometimes with a newer office name and a new series and number
  • The whole page including the duplicate mark, the new number and the reissue date, so the gap between the two dates is explained
  • Common when the original stayed with the other spouse or was lost in a move

Send the duplicate itself; if you also hold a photocopy of the lost original, send it too and we note the difference.

The whole document, not just the fields

Two people, one page, every line accounted for

Form text and series

The printed wording of the form, the series and number and the coat of arms are copied or described, so the translation identifies the same physical certificate.

Birth dates of both spouses

The certificate records each spouse's date and place of birth. They are converted to the US format and checked against the passports you send, so the documents agree.

Back page, even when nearly empty

A divorce stamp, a duplicate note or an apostille sticker sits on the back. Each is translated in place, and a blank back is recorded as blank.

Registrar's block and handwriting

The signature line, the registrar's title and any handwritten entries on older forms are transcribed as written, with unreadable fragments marked instead of guessed.

Where it is accepted

One translation, accepted where you need to file

The same certified file works for immigration, courts, universities and employers. Say who it is for when you order and the certificate is worded for that office.

Questions answered

Marriage certificate translation, the questions we hear most

Is this translation enough for a spousal petition?

It is the standard format: a complete English translation plus a signed statement that the translator is competent and the translation is accurate. That is what USCIS asks for with any foreign-language document.

My spouse and I have different spellings in our passports. Which one do you use?

Each of you is spelled as in your own passport. Send both spellings with the order and we apply them to the certificate and to any other documents in the same order.

The certificate was reissued as a duplicate. Does that matter?

No. A duplicate is a valid certificate; the word for duplicate and the reissue date are translated so the reviewer understands why the issue date is later than the wedding.

There is a stamp on the back about our divorce. Do you translate it?

Yes. Everything printed, stamped or written on either side is translated, and a divorce note is part of the record the officer expects to see.

How much does it cost and how fast is it?

From $23.70 per document, certification included. A one-page document is usually ready the next business day; the date is confirmed before you pay.
